« Understand the Shoulder Girdle through Asana » - for all levels

Location: @INNERCITYOGA, Rue de Rive 3, 1204 Genève

Tight shoulders and shoulder injuries are a common problem for just anyone with a regular yoga practice. We all agree that Healthy shoulders make you happier but also help improve your practice. In this workshop you will learn to prevent injury by using props and alignment cues to better understand how to stabilize your shoulders, helping you access other postures and prevent impingent in your inversions.
We will start on a brief anatomical lecture, pointing out the bones and muscles that make up the shoulder girdle and learn how to move safely from your shoulder blades protecting vulnerable muscles like your rotator cuffs. You will be guided into a shoulder focused asana practice including inversions and some backbends; learn ways to work with a strap to help you understand how to externally rotate your shoulders, creating stability in this joint and reducing injury.
See how specific alignment cues can help you access other postures like backbends and inversions safely by looking at bodies and seeing the movement of the shoulder blades. Practice and learn at the same time and create a sustainable safe yoga practice!

Learn how to heal your lower back through yoga postures by building strength in your legs and core to support your sacrum. Key to stability in the lower back, if the surrounding muscles of the Sacrum are not stable, ligaments and joints in the lower back will be stressed.
In this workshop, you will learn about the muscles and bones surrounding the lower back area and evaluate the standing poses and core exercises needed to build strength here. Hip openers and breath awareness add to the healing of your lower back so you leave feeling free of low back pain and gain the tools to stay happy everafter!

about JOAN HYMAN :
One of YogaWorks' Senior Teachers, Joan Hyman brings 20 years of yoga experience. She completed the
YogaWorks Teacher Training with the renowned founder Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford, followed by
extensive study with Annie Carpenter (a master teacher who taught at INNERCITYOGA before) who is known for her Smart Flow Yoga and highly intelligent sequencing.
Joan's frequent travels reflect her passion for continuously growing and learning to spread her yoga.

Many of us are either born to backbend or dread it from the start of class. Which ever category you fall into, understanding the anatomy of backbends can help you create a backbending practice that helps keep your spine healthy & supple and takes you deeper into your backbending practice. The backbends are traditionally used as a tonic both to the spine & the internal organs and therefore have a powerful effect on the entire body when used properly. This class will give you an understanding of the anatomy and how to apply it to your regular practice as well as take you through a flow to experience the effects immediatly. This will be an intelligent and playful inverted workshop with plenty of information and anatomy to help you progress from a place of confidence.

In order to embrace your full potential sometimes it requires first letting go. In this workshop, we will explore some tools to help unravel tension in the tissues to prepare for deeper work in your practice and your life. Myofascial release works with both the muscles and the fascia to help relieve pain and tension in the musculoskeletal system. By manipulating the myofascia, physical and energetic constrictions are released, opening areas that may feel stuck or resistant to change. This workshop will teach you how to use myofascial release so that you leave this with a simple but effective knowledge that you can apply on your own. This class is open to anyone, no yoga experience needed. Please bring 3 tennis balls.
